The year has begun to round out.
Now, we as a nation, ceremonially give thanks over a ritual feast. But what are we to be thankful for exactly?
Staggering unemployment?
Mounting death tolls in a Biblical war with no beginning and no end?
Degradation of civility and a multitude of freedoms?
Dereliction of duty?
Growing acceptance of the repression of women as a religious freedom?
I am not thankful for any of that, nor do I think it’s enough to be thankful in contrast. There but for the Grace of God go I, simply will not suffice.
I am thankful that my eyes are wide open. I am thankful that my family is healthy and strong. I am thankful for the hope, albeit dwindling, the veil will be lifted from the eyes of the people, and that we will see our way not backward toward old values, but forward to an era where common sense prevails, hard work is rewarded, and individualism is celebrated.
“It is necessary to make virtue fashionable.” – Jose Marti
Today I will prepare our house for tomorrow. I will work with my husband and children to make ready our humble home to receive the bounty we have toiled to provide. I am so very thankful to know, many in our land will do the same.
